This course will introduce students to 12 religious traditions. Six (Jainism, Confucianism, Taoism, Shinto, Zoroastrianism, Baha’i) will be reviewed in very brief terms. The remaining six (Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam) will be studied in more depth including on-site visits to practitioners of these traditions within the London area. Participants will learn to celebrate the differences that exist between religious expressions while also recognizing some common elements by focusing on the three central themes of Anthropology (understanding of Humanity), Theology (understanding of the Divine), and Sacred Texts (understanding and use of sacred writings). This course will be an informal learning environment where we can all share our experiences and together cultivate a common language about religion in general as well as specific religions.
