ON THE COVER
Each year more than 3,000 adult learners enrol in courses for professional development and personal enrichment at Western Continuing Studies.
Every year we are inspired by their passion to challenge themselves, to learn and to succeed. For each student the path to the classroom is unique. Ali Basahi, featured on the cover of our Winter Course Calendar, shares his passion for developing himself – and others.
Ali Basahi brings international business experience to the Western Continuing Studies classroom.
When Ali Basahi pursued his CMA designation after graduating from Western University in 2010, he decided to complement his knowledge of finance and accounting with a Certificate in Project Management from Western Continuing Studies.
“I chose Western Continuing Studies because of the course offerings and the caliber of the instructors,” Basahi says. “The program was a good fit with my finance background. It allowed me to see how project management relates to accounting and what it takes to bring a company to the next level.”
In addition to learning valuable new skills, Basahi enjoyed the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals from the London community.
After spending close to three years as Director, Finance and Business Development at Veritagen Inc. - a start-up company that supports the internationalization of Canadian companies and institutions – he recently accepted a position as a Consultant at Info-Tech Research Group.
But Basahi isn’t done learning.
Last year, he completed his Advanced Professional Certificate in Leadership through Western Continuing Studies. “The program was offered in a workshop format so I could combine it with my work,” he notes. “It covered everything from theoretical perspectives on leadership to emotional intelligence, dealing with conflict, and how to have difficult conversations. These are things we all experience personally, and in a professional setting.”
Basahi’ s commitment to continuous learning is evident in front of the classroom too. He’s been teaching Business Finance at Western Continuing Studies since the fall of 2017 and is looking forward to teaching courses in Business Strategy and Foundations of Financial Management in 2019.
With his background working with companies in Canada and abroad, Basahi brings a wealth of business knowledge and international experience to his role as a Western Continuing Studies instructor.
“We are becoming a very small world,” he comments. “Internationalization is a big thing for many Canadian companies. I am able to share examples of some of the projects I’ve been involved with overseas. I hope when students complete the program they will have a good overview of both local and international issues.”
Basahi says his experience as a Western Continuing Studies student makes him appreciate the challenge of balancing coursework with professional life.
The flexibility and support offered by Western Continuing Studies makes continuous learning an “absolute pleasure,” he says. “As a student and as an instructor, Western Continuing Studies made me feel welcomed and at home. I feel very privileged to be part of their mission to promote continuous learning here in London and across Canada.”
