A critical part of reducing gender-based violence is engaging men. Participants will learn skills for asking questions in ways that promote understanding of abuse and risk, for making complex and ongoing judgements for balancing empathy with risk of collusion, and for joining with men around a shared commitment to safety.

What You Will Learn

  • Develop strategies for building authentic relationships with men in order to assess and manage risk and promote safety for others in men's lives.  
  • Know static and dynamic risk factors and identify them in the context of your clients. 
  • Expand skill set for raising concerns with men about harmful behaviours  
  • Expand skill for making plans with men to avoid abusive behaviour  
  • Manage sense of uncertainty about future risk of abuse perpetration   
  • Apply this knowledge through analysis of interaction with a simulated client

What to Expect

This is an interactive course; you will engage online with your class and instructor through our online learning management system. Plan to log into your course regularly throughout the week. Students will have the opportunity to practice the skills they have learned in an interview with a simulated client.

There are three live Zoom sessions scheduled for this course. 

May 1 - 1:00pm - 4:00pm ET
May 8 - 1:00pm - 4:00pm ET
May 15 - 9:00am - 4:00pm (you will be assigned a 30-minute time slot for Independent skills practice - no live class)
May 22 - 1:00pm - 4:00pm ET

Completion Requirements

This is a graded course where a complete or incomplete will be issued. Evaluation will be based on participation and completion of course activities. Attendance in the live Zoom sessions are mandatory.
