International Applicant or International Student?

We consider you an international applicant if you have completed your Bachelor's degree outside of Canada. You are still considered an international applicant if you completed a Master's or Ph.D. in Canada.

Being an "international applicant" does not affect your status or tuition if you are Canadian or a permanent resident.

You must hold a valid study permit if you are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. In this situation, please follow the guidance provided by Western’s International Student Services. A study permit authorizes your stay in Canada, your participation in academic activities, and, in some cases, employment.

Note: If you are enrolled in the Diploma program, the practicum is a mandatory component. As a result, you will also need to apply for a co-op work permit.

Currently, studying in Canada?

If you are an international student completing a Bachelor's degree in Canada, follow the domestic application process. Upon acceptance, you will still be considered an international student and will be required to pay international tuition.

Post-Graduation Work Permit

Important Update on Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Eligibility.

To qualify for a PGWP, your program’s Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code must be on the list of currently eligible Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes when you submit your study permit or PGWP application.

        Key updates from IRCC:

On June 25, 2025, certain fields of study were removed from the eligible CIP list.

On July 4, 2025, IRCC added some of these fields back.

IRCC has indicated that fields of study removed on June 25, 2025, remain eligible until the list is next updated, which is expected in early 2026.

Important: Any of our programs that are not aligned with an eligible CIP code may not lead to PGWP eligibility.

As eligibility can change based on Canada’s labour market needs, we strongly encourage you to:

Review the current eligible CIP list before applying.

Check the updated list when it is released in early 2026.

For the most accurate and up to date information, always refer to the IRCC PGWP guidelines
