Fast-Track Your Early Career Growth

If you are just getting started in your career, it can feel like you are juggling a hundred things at once, figuring out what you want to do, how to do it well, and how to get noticed for it. While there is no single formula for success, a few key early choices can have a significant impact later.

Be Visible

Hybrid and remote work are here to stay, but being visible early in your career is crucial. “When senior managers are looking for someone to help with a special project or take on a new challenge, it’s often the people they see and interact with regularly who come to mind first,” says Mark Hamilton, Work Integrated Learning Manager. “Being in the office or regularly visible online if in a remote work environment can create opportunities to take on stretch assignments, build relationships, and gain exposure across the organization.”

Those small projects can add up to something big. They help you develop new skills, understand how different departments connect, and position you for leadership opportunities down the road.

Say Yes

Even If a Direct Benefit is Currently Unclear

Early on, it’s all about building your toolkit. Not every task will seem relevant at first, but a broad skill set ultimately pays off. “When you learn the basics of accounting or bookkeeping, for example, you can start to understand the underlying pieces behind budgets, and that’s a skill that can open doors to future management roles,” says Hamilton. “Sometimes the connections between what you’re learning now and where it can take you only become clear with time.”

Layer Your Skillsets

Your degree or past experience gives you a strong foundation, and layering on specialized knowledge can help you to further stand out. If you studied psychology, adding Human Resource training could open additional doors. If you loved science, a program in clinical trials or occupational health and safety could be your path into a growing field.
