Fast-track to a career in HR

Student Profile: Angela Boui

Angela Boui always knew she was interested in pursuing a career in Human Resources. “My friends and family have always told me that I’m good with people,” she says.

After graduating from Western University with a Bachelor of Management Studies (BMOS) in 2021, Boui wanted to become an HR professional as quickly as possible. So, instead of pursuing a master’s degree she enrolled in the Diploma in Human Resources program at Western Continuing Studies. The 10-course program can be completed in one-year, or over two-years as a part-time student

"Having the experience of going from a general employee to dealing with HR during my practicum opened my eyes."

When Boui enrolled as a full-time student in September 2021 the program was offered online only, with synchronous and self-directed learning. Current students have the choice of studying online, or in-person. The program also includes a four-month work integrated learning placement.

The diploma is recognized by the Human Resources Professional Association (HRPA) and meets course requirements towards CHRP/CHRL designations - something Boui intends to pursue this year.

"The professors were phenomenal, and the course work gave me insight into what the real world is like."

Boui held down a full-time position as a greenhouse worker at Parkway Garden Centre throughout her time at WCS. “Going to work was my escape from school,” she says. When it was time for her HR practicum, she completed that at the garden centre, too. “Having the experience of going from a general employee to dealing with HR during my practicum opened my eyes. I hadn’t realized there was so much work that needed to be done behind the scenes.”

Shortly after graduation, Boui landed a job as Human Resources Coordinator at Info-Tech Research Group, one of the world’s leading information technology research and advisory firms.

"The program gave me the knowledge I need, boosted my self-confidence, and helped me get my career started."

“I honestly loved Western Continuing Studies,” says Boui. “The professors were phenomenal, and the course work gave me insight into what the real world is like. The program gave me the knowledge I need, boosted my self-confidence, and helped me get my career started.”
