Explore Funding

 


 

The Government of Canada offers the Explore Program, which it has funded since 1970. The Explore funding allows you to learn or improve your French skills at Western University's French Immersion School in Trois-Pistoles, Quebec without worrying about the money.

Apply for funding via the Explore Program. Remember to select our school as your first choice when applying. 

The Explore Program offers funding which covers the following program costs:

Tuition fees
Accommodation and meals
Workshops and cultural activities 

 

You are responsible for the following costs:

The application fee ($275) which non-refundable and due upon acceptance of the program
Travel costs
Personal spending
Optional cultural activities   


Explore funding is taxable income for which you will receive a tax receipt.

 

To qualify for funding, you must meet BOTH of the following criteria:

be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (those studying on a student visa are not eligible); and
meet the institution’s minimum age requirement by the time Explore begins (18+).

You must also meet ONE of the following criteria:

have been a part-time or full-time student for at least one term during the current school year; or
have been an Odyssey participant within the last two years.

If you meet the above criteria, you may be eligible for a place funded by the Government of Canada. 

 

Not eligible for Explore funding?

We accept participants of all ages (18+) who are not eligible for Explore funding but would like to participate in our Five Week or Three Week University Credit Programs. 

Students in these programs will participate in the same course work and activities as the Explore bursary students and will earn a university credit (half-year or full-year) upon successful completion of the program.     

 

 

Apply for Explore funding, in three easy steps

Apply online at englishfrench.ca. Be sure to list our school as your first or only choice when applying to increase your chance of being awarded a spot in our program.

Follow the application instructions on the Explore website and submit any required documents to the Explore portal, by the application deadline.

Wait for the draw results.

If you have been awarded a spot in our program

You will be notified by both your provincial coordinator and by the French Immersion School. You might be put on a waiting list but, don't despair! There are additional draws every week until all spots are awarded.

If you are awarded funding from the Explore Program to attend our spring or summer session in Trois-Pistoles, we will send you a link to our registration page. At that point, you will be asked to provide the following information:

  • SIN number
  • Placement test score (%) and previous French studies (if any)
  • Course code for the course you wish to take
  • Accommodation requirements, including allergies and dietary restrictions
  • Travel information, if known
  • Application fee ($275) non-refundable
     

 

Western University offers bursaries to help cover some of the costs associated to the University Credit Program in Trois-Pistoles.  These bursaries are awarded based on financial need. 

Western University French Immersion Bursary
Awarded annually to students who demonstrate financial need and are registered in a credit course at Western's French Immersion School. Students in receipt of an Explore Bursary are not eligible to apply. 

Value: 1 at $1600 

Western University French Immersion OSOTF Bursary
Awarded annually to students who demonstrate financial need and are registered in a credit course at Western's French Immersion School. Students in receipt of an Explore Bursary are not eligible to apply. Recipients must meet Ontario residency requirements.

Value: 2 at $1200 (each)

Dr. W. Sherwood Fox Award
Awarded annually to a student in any year of any program attending the spring or summer session in Trois-Pistoles based on academic achievement in French courses and demonstrated financial need. 

Value: 1 at $1900


Application forms are available from the French Immersion School Office and must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar by May 15 for the spring session and July 15 for the summer session.
