This course is part of our Post-Degree Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety Management.

 

This course will provide students with a conceptual framework for toxicology and knowledge and skills relevant to occupational hygiene practice. The study of Occupational Hygiene and Toxicology is both a science and art devoted to the hazard identification, risk assessment and control of those environmental factors and stresses arising in or from the workplace that may cause illness, injury, or inefficiency.

Topics

  • An introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the human body with a focus on target organs and systems affected by chemical, biological and physical toxicity. 
  • The general principles of toxicology, including absorption, distribution, biotransformation and excretion of chemicals. 
  • A historical background, current status and basic concepts of occupational hygiene, including anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of workplace hazards.
  • An understanding of the role of the Occupational hygienist and other professionals in the occupational health team.
  • An overview of chemical, biological, physical and ergonomic stresses and an in-depth examination of the relevant laws and regulations.
