This course, through theoretical exploration and practical skill-building, offers opportunities to refine capacity to intervene effectively. The course reviews frameworks including the Duluth Model, Trauma and Violence Informed Practice, and equips practitioners with tools from CBT, Narrative Therapy, and ACT to address abusive behaviour, build accountability, and support safer relationships.

What You Will Learn

  • Demonstrate an understanding of accountability frameworks that underlie effective utilization of therapeutic modalities with men who cause harm.
  • Use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques to help men identify and restructure distorted beliefs that support violence, increase emotional regulation, and interrupt automatic patterns of abusive behaviour.
  • Apply Narrative Therapy practices to deconstruct dominant stories about control and entitlement, and support the re-authoring of identity toward non-violence and relational accountability.
  • Utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) strategies to help men develop psychological flexibility, accept difficult internal experiences without acting on them, and commit to values-based behaviour that promotes safety and respect.
  • Apply CBT, Narrative, and ACT skills with a simulated client to begin to practice strategies of promoting change in abusive behaviour.
