This course explores the complexities of working at the intersection of intimate partner violence and substance use. Participants will explore why responses rooted in trauma- and violence-informed, gender-transformative care, informed by sex-, gender-, and equity-based analyses, are essential, and will practice strategies that uphold safety, empowerment, and self-determination.

What You Will Learn

  2. Learn about how the differential impacts of various substances including nicotine, alcohol, opioids, meth, and cannabis impact those affected by IPV and impact service responses.
  3. Practice skills to reduce stigma, open supportive conversations, utilize motivational interviewing principles, and apply trauma- and violence-informed practices that uphold safety, empowerment, and promote recovery.
  4. Recognize and address stigma connected with SU and the co-occurrence of SU and IPV.
  5. Explore and regulate personal biases that can impede working in ways that align with service-user-centered care.
