This course provides an overview of a dignity-driven approach to working with people who use abuse.

The approach highlights perpetrators' ability to choose respectful behaviour, building on their existing capacities and ambivalence about their abusive actions to support meaningful change. Participants will explore this through a Response-Based Practice lens, which emphasizes dignity, resistance, and the social interactions that shape abusive and respectful behaviour.

What You Will Learn

  1. Participants will be able to describe how they can use clients’ excuses and justifications for violence to help clients to identify their pro-social values
  2. Participants will be able to explore the client’s ambivalence related to their behaviour, explore the impact of the client’s actions, and be able to align with the client’s own non-violent initiatives
  3. Participants will be able to describe how microanalysis can be used to help highlight agency in client behaviour, and to promote positive conversation around the ability to change and the client’s prosocial values.
  4. Participants will be able to describe how framebreaks can be used in therapy to highlight a client’s ambivalence about their abusive behaviour
