Positive female explores nature, points into distance, shows direction, stands over green background, shares impressions about recreation time and adventure tour

Deepen your creative relationship with the natural world.

Nature writing is a course that helps heighten your awareness of the natural world through inspired readings, wanderings, and wonderings. You will hone your writing skills as you observe nature up close and document the sights, smells, tastes, sounds and experiences. As well, we will review the history of Canadian nature writing and the importance of the wilderness in literature.

You will explore and deepen your understanding of nature through in-the-field experiences. You can also choose to work on an ecosystem of personal importance such as your own balcony or backyard.

Topics

  • Historical and environmental contexts of nature writing.
  • The importance of nature in fiction.
  • Potential markets for your writing.
  • The basics of a good piece of writing: snappy lead, confident tone, strong structure that ends with a punch.
  • How to give and receive feedback in a supportive environment.

Come prepared to share your writing, opinions and perspectives with the class.

All that is required is a little creativity and curiosity.
