This course introduces design thinking as a human-centred approach to creative problem-solving, building on existing foundational courses while shifting learners toward applied, portfolio-based learning. Students engage in design challenges that are personally meaningful and grounded in their own lived experiences, communities, or interests. Using a structured process of empathy, problem framing, ideation, prototyping, and testing, learners transform insights into tangible solutions. The online format blends asynchronous learning with live studio sessions, digital collaboration tools, and accessible, at-home prototyping activities. Students build a professional portfolio that demonstrates creative confidence, applied problem-solving, and the ability to move from insight to action.

Topics

  • Flexible, transferable, collaborative methods and tools for approaching problems in creative ways.
  • Create mind-maps, engage in rapid prototyping, practice pitching, and take away templates to use at work
  • Practice generating many ideas quickly, to prototype the best of them, and to consider how to iterate and refine the solution based on user feedback
