You will increase your knowledge of French through a hands-on approach  and gain independence and confidence as you progress through the various topics. You will tackle negotiating your way in unexpected situations and you will learn how to express your opinion. Francophone media and workplace situations will springboard your learning.

Live virtual sessions, facilitated by the instructor, will allow you to practice listening and speaking with your classmates.

  • Interactions when things don't go according to plan (trip cancellations, exchanges/refunds, complaints, etc.)

  • French in the workplace: roles, daily tasks and communications with colleagues

  • Francophone media (cinema, television, radio) and the Canadian context

Once registered you will receive details on accessing the course. You can access the course as early as the course start date, however access to the course may take up to 24 hours. Western Alumni must please select "WCS Student" or "New Student" when registering in order to access OWL. 

This course places an important emphasis on cultural components. We will continue to explore the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec, home to Western University's French Immersion School.

Learn to speak clearly and with more confidence by improving your French pronunciation.  With the help of short videos and other visual aids, common areas of difficulty for French second language speakers, including Quebecois French, will be featured in a number of  pronunciation capsules.

This is an Online: Self-paced course, and you can set your own schedule with the suggested timelines and due dates provided. Start anytime and study as much or as little as you want from week to week, completing the coursework at your own speed. Depending on your level of experience with French, you can expect to take 20 hours to complete the course.


Completion Requirements

This is a non-graded, Online : Self-paced course. A complete or incomplete will be issued based on completion of course activities.
